What are nucleosomes?

Nucleosome is considered to be one of the most stable particles in the DNA that helps in the compacting and transcripting the DNA information. Hence, nucleosomes are responsible for carrying out the hereditary information.

Nucleosomes are generally wrapped around in spiral fashion to the base of the simple DNA protein known as histone. They are normally located in the nucleus of the cell and therefore, they are very much attached to the DNA forming chromatin. However, over a period of time these DNA proteins can change their structure and rearrange themselves depending on what site they are positioned.

DNA in orange & Histones in blueNucleosomes normally cover up histone proteins, which are considered to be closely associated with the genes of the individual. Hence, nucleosomes are also considered as the packaging of the DNA cells inside the nucleus.

Nucleosomes have a spiraling shape, and if they are stretched out in one line they can measure up to around two meters. Every nucleosome is different from the other because it totally depends on the histone protein and the neighboring proteins and how much looping sequence is required by those proteins. Scientists and researchers are still not able to unlock much information about certain behavior patterns by nucleosomes in the DNA.
