How to Stay Mentally Sharp?

We often talk about weight reduction, keeping the body fit and exercising in order to have a great body, but how often do we think about our mind? Brain is the most important part of our body. All other organs are controlled by it.

We must aim to keep our mind healthy and sharp; its health must be of prime importance to us. By adopting simple ways we can keep our mind forever young and sharp. Having a balanced diet, doing mental drills and exercises, observing and keeping our mind open for learning, meditation and sound sleep are essential for maintaining the sharpness of your mind.

We must always remember what we eat not only affects our health physically but mentally too. Having a healthy diet would always prove to be beneficial for our mind. Lots of greens and fruits must be included in our diet to keep our mind fresh, alert and healthy. Consuming good amount of water is also a great way of keeping the mind fresh.

We do not notice it in our daily lives but the most harmful thing for our mind is unhealthy thoughts. Pessimistic thinking affects our brain adversely. It creates tension in the mind lowering its efficiency. So we must always be optimistic. Breeding negative feelings and thoughts is a big no-no.

Technology has made us lazy like never before. Even if we have to do simple calculations in our day to day life we seek the help of a calculator or computer. We must start doing simple and even a little complex calculation ourselves. This will not tire or exert our mind; instead it is a form of healthy dose for our brain.

Solving mathematical puzzles and brain teasers is a very good way of keeping our mind sharp. You may opt to solve simple puzzles like, Sudoku which has fast picked up popularity all over the world. It appears simple but is a very good way of nourishing out mind.
Having a proper sound sleep is very essential. Our mind keeps functioning throughout the day at a very fast pace. It too needs rest and a sound sleep for optimum hours would be just right for our mind.

Meditation and Yoga are known to be great mind sharpness boosters. Practice them daily to keep your mind healthy and fit.

Observing the world around you also helps your mind gain knowledge and staying alert all the time. Reading helps a great deal too. It is very beneficial for our mind to read inspirational books too. Books of all variety like self help, non-fiction, fiction and general knowledge are really good for our mind.

Life is there to impart knowledge and learn throughout our lives. Learning never stops. It must be continued throughout our entire life to keep our brain sharp. It has been well said, ‘Just as iron rusts from disuse, and so does the intellect’. So keep using your mind to keep it sharp!
