How to calculate BMI (Body Mass Index)?

Leading cause of heart diseases in today’s time is obesity. Instead of going to the doctor and checking out your body mass index (BMI), it is better to calculate it by yourself. BMI refers to the ratio of the persons weight to their height squared. You can easily calculate your body mass index with the help of a calculator. Calculations done with the help of a formula can provide you exact information on this. BMI is developed in a metric system so you should know the formula to proceed further. Formula for this is:

BMI = Height (in metres) / Weight (in kilogrammes) squared

All you require to do is divide your height by the square of your weight. You can also understand it easily as:

BMI = (Height (in inches) * 703) / Weight (in pounds) squared

Under this system of calculation of body mass index, you need to multiply your height by 703 and then divide it by the square of your weight. People of five feet have height of 60 inches and those of six feet have a height of 72 inches. This will surely help you in calculation. If the BMI index which you get after calculation is less than 18.5, then it means that you are underweight. People who have BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 are of normal weight. Those of 25 to 29.9 are overweight in nature while those of more than 30 are obese.
