What are oil sands?

Oil sands are a kind of mixture that contains various sand particles along with a liquid called bitumen. Oil sands are comparatively darker in color and are usually found petroleum and coal sites. Oil sands are found all over the world, but they are more common in countries like Canada and Venezuela. This sand contains natural sand, clay and extremely dark petroleum liquid, which is known as bitumen.

If you take a look back into history you will find that bitumen was considered as one of the important substances that was used for various day to day activities. Many emperors and kings in Persia and Mesopotamia used these oil sands for constructive purpose.

Today, oil sand extraction is also one of the important businesses that is getting a lot of attention because people can extract petroleum from these oil sands. However, squeezing out oil from oil sands is far costlier than traditional oil mining and therefore, few people prefer to venture into this business.

Oil sands generally do not allow crude oil to flow freely and therefore, there are certain methods that should be incorporated to extract oil out of oil sands. Apart from Canada and Venezuela other countries like United States and Russia are also exploring their vast reserves of oil sands to extract crude oil from it for better profitability.
