How is the game of marbles played?

This game is played with small crystal balls called as marbles. In this game a player has to shoot out marbles of other contestants out of the playing ring while keeping his marble within the ring. As long as the shooter keeps shooting others marbles out he/she plays his turn or it’s the chance of the other player. The player who collects the maximum number of marbles by shooting it out of the ring is declared the winner. Consecutive games can be played to declare a champion.

Where is it played?
A game of marbles is ideally played on a sandy playground or the baseball fields backstop area. A stick or a string compass or a piece of chalk is used to draw a circle. This circle measures about ten feet in diameter. The area inside the circle is the official playing area of the marbles game. The area is then cleared of any large stones which could affect and hinder the game.

Once the area is cleared, each player contributes certain number of marbles as decided amongst them. These marbles are arranged in the shape of cross inside the circle. To decide who shoots first, once has to either shout “first” or a deciding game is played. Two lines are drawn at different ends. The player has to stand at one end and shoot a marble towards the other end line. The player whose marble lands closest to the end line plays first followed by the player closest to the first and so on.

Rules
The first shooter has to place his/her shooting marble at the outside perimeter of the circle. The basic rule of the game is to knock out other players’ shooter marbles without throwing your marble out of the circle. If a shooter fails to knock out a marble, his/her turn is over and second player follows. The knocked out marbles are collected by the shooter. At the end of the game the shooter with the maximum knocked out marbles wins the game.

How is score kept in bowling?

Bowling scores are usually recorded either on a sheet or calculated and shown on a video screen. When all the pins are knocked down in one frame, score gets multiplied.

An overview of bowling score
Bowling consists of ten points each game, collectively also known as frames. An ideal game of bowling is measured by a score of 300 through ten frames. The bowler can even knock down as many as 120 pins in a single game; but 300 can be made with bonus scores through strikes and spares.

Way to keep scores
One point is scored by knocking down every pin on a roll. Knocking down 10 pins on the first roll is called ‘strike’, whereas, knocking down all 10 in 2 rolls is called ‘spare’.

‘X’ is used to mark the frame box on the score sheet for every strike. Following this, two consecutive throws get added to the frame that the bowler go the strike. A spare is denoted by ‘/’ is used in a subsequent box. The next throw gets added to the frame indicating that the bowler got the spare.

When a bowler steps on or over the foul line, ‘F’ is used to mark the ball as foul attempt on the score sheet.

With three consecutive strikes maximum 30 points can be scored in a frame. Failing to knock down a pin is called gutter.

The maximum amount of points a bowler can receive for one frame is 30, which indicates three consecutive strikes. A bowler gets a spare if gutter happens in the first throw.

A bowler gets 10 points and also the total of the next two balls in case of a strike; for a spare, the bowler scores 10 points and also the score of only the next ball.
In the last frame, by rolling a strike or spare, the bowler can roll the ball once again to increase score. It’s the only time that the third roll is allowed and that too, it’s done only for scoring purposes.

How is solitaire played?

Solitaire is a card game, also called patience which makes the player to return cards dealt randomly to their own suit in the order of numbers. It is a popular table top game with physical playing cards and also a computer game played with virtual cards.

Playing technique
After shuffling a deck of cards, the cards are dealt out from left to right in a certain order forming seven piles known as tableau. In each pile the first card is face up with the rest six, face down. Dealing goes on with a face-up card on the second pile which is followed by five cards face down. This continues till every pile bears a card facing up. The rest of the cards get placed to the left over the tableau in what is called a ‘stock pile’.

After cards are dealt, the game begins when the player starts arranging any of the face up cards aptly. The cards are moved to form stacks in such a manner that alternating colors begin with one of the four Kings. Thus a Queen of spades and be placed above a King of Hearts or may be diamonds, but never over a King of clubs or even spades.

How the game proceeds
After the initial plays are made, the player starts drawing cards from the pile lying on the top left corner of the playing field. Variations occur when the third card is turned over from the pile. The card lying under it can only be used if this third card can be played. In case, this is unable to be played, three more cards get turned over. The game continues until the time when no more moves can be made; or in other words, when the mission of the game gets fully achieved.

Object of the game
A new area of play above the tableau gets created, called foundation when an Ace is encountered in the game. Here each of the four Aces begins a foundation pile. The chief objective of the game is to move all the cards to their specific foundation color by suit which must ascend chronologically from Aces to Kings.

How is soccer played?

Soccer also known popularly as football is an outdoor game played with a ball where two teams engage in a rectangular field. Every team has a goalpost erected behind the team members. The aim of the game is to deliver the ball by kicking it into the opponent team’s goal post where points are awarded for every goal. The winning team is the one that achieves the highest points by scoring the maximum number of goals.

Rules of the game
The game is not very easy as using hands to control the ball by players is strictly prohibited. Players use their feet, heads and bodies to control and move the ball towards the opposite goal. They are forbidden to use hands even to keep the ball out of their own goal. The goalkeeper of every team takes full charge of defending the team’s goal. He is the only player allowed to use his hands along with other body parts in handling the ball. Intentional touching the ball with hands is an offense, and in case of any such accidents by any team player, the referee blows his whistle and penalty is assigned to the team. The opposite team is awarded a penalty kick. However, in case of an accidental collision of an airborne ball with a player’s hand, the referee may pronounce it a ‘hand ball’. The opponent team might be given a free kick in this case. Certain other activities such as intentional kicking, holding or tripping, hurting any other player also calls for penalties.

The players can be penalized by awarding them yellow card which is a stern warning to refrain themselves from unprofessional behavior. In case a player continues to disrupt the game by unacceptable behavior he is given another yellow card or the red card. A red card or two yellow card symbolizes that the player cannot play in the match anymore and has to leave the field for his objectionable behavior. It also means that he cannot play the next subsequent match and has to sit in the bleachers.

Details of the game
Eleven players of each team are dressed uniformly matching the team’s color. The goalkeeper is dressed differently to stand out. The referee who regulates and watches the game is accompanied by a pair of linesmen walking along the sidelines and noting the team responsible for kicking the ball over the line. In such cases, the opponent team throws the ball back on the field towards the goal of the other team.

As the game begins with one team kicking off the ball from the designated center spot, the ball is constantly on a move till the referee blows his whistle. Rapid change in a team’s possession of the ball goes on during the game.

Who invented Basketball?

Basketball is a game seeped in all-American tradition whose popularity has spread to all the corners of the world. This unique team sport, which is played at the social, college and professional levels, has a well documented history so there are no controversies regarding its inventors.

How it started
Basketball started way back in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts where a group of PE trainers were becoming impatient and bored with gym activities. They were getting increasingly frustrated as they could not go outside and play outdoor games such as baseball due to the harsh winter conditions. Seeing this, Luther Gulick, the head of the athletics department, called upon a young trainer whose name was James Naismith to invent a new indoor game that would provide players with some athletic stimulus.

BasketballA sport had to be designed which gave the players something to do other than just run around. Nainsmith had spent his childhood in Canada where knock-the-duck was a popular game which involved throwing a small rock or stone at an object in order to knock it off from where it stood. Naismith adapted the idea and developed a game where a ball had to be thrown into a basket attached to a high point on the wall. Not only did this give the players an opportunity to exert themselves, but this game could also be played in teams.

Popularity of the Game
The game was well received and within a few years its popularity spread across the East and West Coasts. The first college basketball game to be played competitively took place in 1896 between the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. Iowa won that game and there has been no looking back since then for the sport.
